How to weigh in on a project in your neighborhood
You do not need to be a land-use expert to participate. A clear, specific comment from someone who knows the neighborhood can help a decision-maker understand what is at stake.
Find the case
Start with the case number on the mailed or posted hearing notice. Use Los Angeles City Planning’s Case Search to locate the project. If you do not have a number, use Advanced Search or the address and project information on the notice.
Read the notice and agenda
Confirm which decision-maker will hear the item, the hearing date, and the instructions for written and live public comment. Review the staff report and project materials when they are available. City Planning’s commission, board, and hearing calendar is the best source for current agendas.
Submit written comments
Use the contact method listed on the notice or agenda and include the case number in the subject line. Submit before the stated deadline whenever possible so the comment can be included in the record reviewed before the hearing.
Speak at the hearing
Follow the participation instructions on the specific agenda. Meetings may offer in-person and remote participation, and procedures can change. Review City Planning’s current hybrid commission meeting instructions before the hearing. Be ready to identify the agenda item or case number and keep within the time announced by the chair.
Make the comment useful
Lead with your position, then explain why. Describe your connection to the neighborhood and focus on specific effects you know firsthand. Connect concerns to the project before the decision-maker, distinguish evidence from assumptions, and suggest a practical change or condition when you can.
